The idea of using your PDA as a GPS or Global Positioning System device is common and in fact, there are numerous GPS accessories available on the market for this purpose.  However, up until recently, these GPS units made use of a CompactFlash card slot or a wired configuration to hook up to the handheld unit. Today, thanks to the wireless technology known as Bluetooth, one can easily transform a PDA into a handheld GPS device that is fully-functional without the need for cables, expansion slots and other unsightly accessories. Set the GPS receiver somewhere with a clear sky view while holding or mounting the PDA for greater screen visibility and quick menu access.


Additionally, GPS receivers come with navigation software that usually contains maps of the US, a database of points of interest to users, and other features such as the ability to recalculate a route. These features would of course vary with the specific model used. Advanced GPS models will be able to provide better reception.

When shopping for a GPS system, do not forget to shop for necessary Bluetooth GPS accessories as well such as batteries and a memory card. If your PDA does not have an integrated Bluetooth capability, do not worry. Instead, head for the Bluetooth GPS accessories section in your local computer store and look for a combo card that combines a Bluetooth PDA and PC adapter in one to make your PDA or laptop connect wirelessly.

For a Bluetooth-enabled PDA, notebook or smart phone, there are many Bluetooth GPS receivers that are ideal to use. Just make sure to look for a total GPS solution because some receivers require additional GPS map software in order for the GPS features to work. In this regard, always make sure you have all the components needed by your Bluetooth GPS accessories. Also, check the specific areas that are covered by the GPS software.

Some other Bluetooth GPS accessories that you would need include a charging cable for your Bluetooth GPS Receiver. Some cables allow direct charging of receiver from the mount for greater convenience as well as PDA charging. There are also suction windshield mounts for your GPS receivers. These Bluetooth GPS accessories feature locking levers to secure the mount on the windshield in a position that will provide the best results. You can install or remove them quite easily.
