Motorola S9-HD stereo Bluetooth headphones review

The Motorola Rokr S9 HD has a comfortable and secure design and great audio quality. The buttons are easy to use as well. Also, the power button feels stiff, and the charger jack cover isn't secured properly. The bottom line: The Motorola Rokr S9 HD is a simple and lightweight stereo Bluetooth headset, but take caution when using it for an active lifestyle.

Review:
When Motorola came out with the Motorola Rokr S9 headset two years ago, stereo Bluetooth headsets were still fairly new, and the S9 gained popularity because of its sports-centric design. Now that more phones have stereo Bluetooth capability (including the iPhone 3G, thanks to its latest firmware update), Motorola is wise to keep hammering away at making new headsets, like the Motorola Rokr S9 HD. The Rokr S9 HD comes with a Motorola D650 iPod adapter.

The Motorola Rokr S9 HD has a design almost identical to the S9. The S9 HD can also be a bit of a hassle if you have longer hair. The music player controls are located above the right earpiece and the call button and volume controls are above the left. We tested the Motorola Rokr S9 HD headset with the Apple iPhone 3G and the Casio Exilim C721. The Rokr S9 HD comes with SRS-WOW HD sound that really amps up the overall fidelity of the music. Many cell phone manufacturers are using proprietary headphone ports on their phones, but are adding Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support for wireless stereo Bluetooth headsets, such as the Motorola S9-HD. How well does the S9-HD stand up to the music, though?

The Motorola S9-HD is a stylish, yet subdued headset, clad mostly in a rubberized matte black plastic exterior. The Motorola S9-HD headphones wrap easily and nicely around the back of your head, with each earpiece resting comfortably in each ear. Control buttons for the S9-HD are found easily on both sides of the headphones, and are nicely arranged in a column containing 3 buttons each. I was able to wear the S9-HD for hours, listening to music without experiencing any discomfort at all. When you have paired the Motorola S9-HD with your phone, you can simply press the call button on the left earpiece to answer or end a phone call. While on a phone call, you can use the play/pause button to mute/unmute the headset's microphone.

Stereo Bluetooth headsets evoke mixed emotions among tech enthusiasts. Enter the Motorola MotoROKR S9-HD, a model that pretty much solves the audio quality problem. The 1.1-ounce S9-HD measures 5.0 by 5.1 by 1.9 inches (HWD). Combined with the soft rubber earbud covers, the S9-HD is comfortable enough to wear all day. On the left-hand side of the headset are the Play and Track Skip buttons. The right-hand side, meanwhile, features volume controls and a multifunction button for managing voice calls. The headset isn't a true in-ear design. With a variety of MP3 and AAC tracks played from the iPod, the S9-HD sounded clear and pleasant, with decent mid-bass kick, a pronounced stereo image, and a bright overall timbre. My ears grew tired of the bright sound after about 30 minutes.

Overall, the S9-HD is a significant step up in sound quality from the bundled wired earbuds that come with most devices these days. That unseated the earbuds in my ear and worsened the sound quality.

Overall, my tunes sounded impressive over this headset. The Motorola S9-HD delivered a rich stereo experience, including great-sounding bass. Call quality on the headset was up and down. The people I called told me that I sounded fine, albeit muffled at times. I'd recommend this headset for quick phone calls (as opposed to long conference calls) and for occasional music playing--preferably in a sedentary situation.
